DELTA-Hub aims to understand the functioning of river delta systems. Our mission is to build a centre of excellence at the University of Bucharest that advances the science and education needed for the sustainable future of deltas worldwide.

The Danube Delta: A Unique European Treasure

While other European deltas such as the Rhône, Rhine, and Ebro have been almost entirely reshaped for agriculture, the Danube Delta remains the largest best-preserved delta in the EU. Its intricate network of natural and anthropic canals, lakes, sandbanks, long stretches of beaches, ancient forests, and the world's largest reed beds make it a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a stronghold for biodiversity.

But this ecosystem is now under immense pressure.

A Delta That Needs Understanding

The Danube Delta faces existential challenges driven by human intervention and climate change:

  • Channelisation and human intervention — A century of dredging, canal-cutting, and embankment has reshaped how water and sediment move through the delta, redirecting flow away from areas that depend on it and amplifying erosion and habitat degradation.
  • Sediment starvation — Dams on the Danube, above all the Iron Gates I and II, have sharply cut the supply of sediment that naturally builds the delta and offsets erosion. Starved of this sediment, the coast erodes faster and ecosystems degrade.
  • Rising sea levels — The Black Sea is projected to rise by as much as one metre by 2100, threatening to permanently flood large areas of a delta whose average elevation is just 60 cm.

Securing the delta's future depends on management guided by rigorous scientific evidence. Decisions taken without a systemic, long-term view risk making things worse. This is where DELTA-Hub comes in.

Our Approach: Science, Education, and Collaboration

The project rests on three pillars:

  1. Advanced modelling. We are building a "digital twin" of the Danube Delta — a detailed virtual model. By combining satellite data with in-situ acoustic and optical sensors, the model lets us simulate the effects of climate change and test management options before they are put into practice.

  2. A new generation of experts. Romania currently lacks specialists trained to work with complex satellite and modelling data. DELTA-Hub addresses this gap by:

    • launching a new Master's programme at the University of Bucharest in coastal and deltaic management;
    • running summer schools, field trips, and hands-on courses to train the next generation of delta scientists.
  3. Collaboration and open science. We believe data and knowledge should be shared. DELTA-Hub is committed to:

    • deepening ties between the University of Bucharest and leading delta researchers worldwide;
    • making our data and results openly accessible;
    • translating findings into practical, science-based recommendations for policymakers and delta managers.

Delta-Hub work packages across Education, Engagement and Research: WP1–2 coordination & management, WP3 recruitment, WP4 scientific advances, WP5 academic programs, WP6 ERA capacity, WP7–8 policy and dissemination.
