Data Science & AI-Assisted Coding for the Danube Delta
Faculty of Geography, University of Bucharest
DELTA-Hub is hosting a two-day practical workshop on climate change in deltaic, coastal, and marine environments, with a central focus on the Danube Delta and the Black Sea.
Participants will learn how to access global open datasets (Copernicus CDS, satellite imagery, climate reanalyses), use Python for environmental data analysis, work effectively with AI coding assistants, and apply basic statistical methods. The programme features an invited lecture by Prof. Edward Anthony (CEREGE, Aix-Marseille Université) — How River Deltas Work: Physical Processes and the Forces that Shape Them.
You can bring your own dataset or research question, provided it relates to deltaic, coastal, marine, or fluvial environments.
Programme
- Friday 22 May — training modules and guided work on data
- Saturday 23 May (morning) — project work
- Saturday (afternoon) — 3-minute project pitches
Two €100 prizes will be awarded for the best results, and selected projects will be published on the DELTA-Hub website. Lunch is provided on both days.
Who can apply
Open to students from any related field — including geography, geology, environmental sciences, oceanography, engineering, and informatics — who are able to attend in person at the Faculty of Geography in Bucharest. No prior coding experience required; just bring your laptop.

First Stakeholder Workshop – Sediment Management & Modelling
Mila 23, Danube Delta
Between 16 and 18 April 2026, we met in Mila 23, in the Danube Delta, for the DELTA-HUB Sediment Management and Modelling Stakeholder Workshop.
The workshop brought together representatives from ARBDD, INCD-DD, GeoEcoMar, ADI ITI Delta Dunării, WWF Romania, the DALA Foundation, and AFDJ for focused discussions on sediment management, hydrodynamics, dredging and canal interventions, climate change scenarios, and data needs for improving the Digital Twin numerical model of the Danube Delta.
Working with stakeholders showed how important local knowledge, institutional experience, and field data are for building models that can support real decisions in complex delta systems. The discussions also opened up future directions for public engagement and the communication of DELTA-HUB results. 📣
